WHAT ARE PERMANENT COSMETICS?
First of all, yes, it is a tattoo! Also known as micropigmentation, PMU or permanent makeup, it is essentially a cosmetic tattoo technique that creates filled-in brows, crisp eyeliner, and tinted lips, etc., that can last for over a year. In fact, it’s not technically permanent, but semi-permanent. Trust us, this is a good thing. For example, say you had gotten your eyebrows done permanently in 2000, you would regret them now. This technique allows your makeup to change with the times, and evolve, just like you.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
The longevity of today’s cosmetic tattoos varies, but most estimates put the duration of results anywhere between one and three years (hence, why ‘semi-permanent’ is the more accurate moniker). Everyone’s body metabolizes pigment differently, and, since the ink is placed very close to the skin’s surface, it also sloughs away in time. As a result, routine touch ups are required.
DOES IT HURT?
Honestly, not really. Prior to breaking the skin we use a topical numbing agent to take the edge off. The most you will feel will be during the first pass of the procedure, but you are pretty numb, and if you feel anything it will just feel like a pinch. After the skin is broken, we use a numbing gel specifically designed to numb the area from inside the broken skin -- then you won't feel a thing! This numbing gel is used throughout the procedure to keep you pain free. You can always ask for additional numbing if at any point during the procedure you are uncomfortable.
THE MOST POPULAR PERMANENT COSMETICS OPTIONS:
In addition to eyebrow microblading and shading, modern cosmetic dermal pigmentation options include services that mimic eye makeup, lip color, and even freckles. Here’s an overview of our popular permanent makeup options:
1. MICROBLADING
- Technique: Pigment is pressed into hand-placed, hairlike cuts to fill in and/or extend and shape eyebrows.
- Procedure Time: 2 to 3 hours for the first treatment (with numbing cream); 1 to 2 hours for a follow-up.
- Healing: Flaking and scabbing for a week to 10 days.
- Restrictions: Follow aftercare instructions! Do not put anything outside of technician prescribed aftercare products on brows, in the manner which the technician has advised. No makeup on area for at least 10 days after procedure.
- Cost: About $300+ not including touchup cost.
- Results: Lasts anywhere from 1 to 3 years.
- Risks: Fuzzy lines, premature pigment fade, infection, allergic reaction, scarring, granulomas (inflammatory bumps surrounding the pigment).
- Best Candidate: Someone with sparse or patchy brows seeking a fuller shape with natural looking hair strokes. Clients under the age of 35, with small pours and minimum fine lines.
2. POWDER OR OMBRE BROWS:
- Technique: Pigment is implanted into the entire brow area with a tattoo machine and needle/needles to give the appearance of a full and filled in brow.
- Cost: About $350+ not including touchup cost.
- Results: Lasts anywhere from 1 to 3 years.
- Risks: Fuzzy lines, premature pigment fade, infection, allergic reaction, scarring, granulomas (inflammatory bumps surrounding the pigment)
- Best Candidate: Someone with sparse or patchy brows seeking a fuller shape with natural looking hair strokes. This is the ideal procedure for clients over the age of 35.
3. PERMANENT EYELINER:
- Technique: Pigment implanted above the lash line, with a tattoo machine and needle/needles, to mimic eye pencil or liquid eyeliner, with or without a winged corner.
- Procedure Time: 1 to 2 hours for the first treatment; 1 to 2 hours for a follow-up (if needed).
- Healing: Minor swelling, some flaking and scabbing for a week to 10 days
- Restrictions: Follow aftercare instructions! Do not put anything outside of technician prescribed aftercare products on brows, in the manner which the technician has advised. No makeup on area for at least 10 days after procedure.
- Cost: About $200+ not including touchup cost.
- Results: Lasts anywhere from 1 to 3 years.
- Risks: Fuzzy lines, premature pigment fade, eyelash loss, infection, allergic reaction, scarring, granulomas.
- Best Candidate: A daily eyeliner wearer who wants a permanent solution and does not plan to get eyelid surgery (as this will distort the look of the tattoo).
3. PERMANENT EYELASH ENHANCEMENT:
- Technique: Pigment is placed within the lash line using a tattoo machine and needle/needles to give the appearance of full lashes.
- Procedure Time: 1 to 2 hours for the first treatment; 1 to 2 hours for a follow-up (if needed).
- Healing: Minor swelling, some flaking and scabbing for about a week
- Restrictions: Follow aftercare instructions! Do not put anything outside of technician prescribed aftercare products on brows, in the manner which the technician has advised. No makeup on area for at least 10 days after procedure.
- Cost: About $200+ not including touchup cost.
- Results: Lasts anywhere from 1 to 3 years
- Risks: Fuzzy lines, premature pigment fade, eyelash loss, infection, allergic reaction, scarring, granulomas
- Best Candidate: Someone looking to subtly emphasize the eye area.
4. PERMANENT LIP BLUSHING:
- Technique: Also called permanent lipstick or lip blushing, pigment is deposited into the entire lip area to create a wash of color and/or the illusion of fuller lips. This is accomplished by using a tattoo machine and needle/needles to implant pigment into the lips.
- Procedure Time: 2 to 3 hours for the first treatment; 1 to 2 hours for a follow-up
- Healing: Flaking and scabbing for a week to 10 days
- Restrictions: Follow aftercare instructions! Do not put anything outside of technician prescribed aftercare products on brows, in the manner which the technician has advised. No makeup on area for at least 10 days after procedure.
- Cost: About $200+ not including touchup cost.
- Results: Lasts anywhere from 1 to 2 years (fades faster than other areas)
- Risks: Fuzzy lines, premature pigment fade, infection, allergic reaction, scarring, granulomas, herpes flareup (if present).
- Best Candidate: Someone looking for a slight color enhancement and the illusion of fullness. The best candidate will have spoken with their physician to obtain anti-viral medications prior to their appointment; this will insure that a coldsore outbreak doesn’t damage newly blushed lips.
5. BB GLOW FACIAL:
- Technique: This treatment is a 100% natural, semi-permanent foundation that is painlessly nano-needled into the outer layers of the skin using a micro-needle machine. It will even out imperfections and discoloration, leaving your skin looking like you’re wearing the highest quality, lightweight face makeup.
- Procedure Time: 1.5 hour sessions, every 2-4 weeks.
- Healing: None.
- Restrictions: Do not wash or put anything on face for 24 hours after procedure.
- Cost: About $200+ per service.
- Results: Service requires 3-4 sessions to achieve desired results; then every 6 weeks - 6 months for maintenance.
- Risks: Potential allergy to products or skin irritation.
- Best Candidate: Good candidates include individuals with dull and uneven skin texture, freckles, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, age spots, sun spots, early aging, and lax skin, and much more! If you’re looking to instantly unblock and minimize pores, hydrate the skin, reduce and improve scarring, and reduce inflammation, the BB Glow facial may be the right treatment for you.
6. FAUX FRECKLES:
- Technique: The faux freckles are created by depositing a pigment several shades darker than the client's skin tone into their skin, creating tiny dots that resemble natural freckles. Since the color goes into the skin rather than on top of it.
- Procedure Time: 1.5 hours.
- Healing: About 10 days.
- Restrictions: Follow aftercare instructions! Do not put anything outside of technician prescribed aftercare products on brows, in the manner which the technician has advised. No makeup on area for at least 10 days after procedure.
- Cost: About $150+ not including touchup cost.
- Results: These tattooed freckles aren't washed off or smudged, and they last up to 3 years.
- Risks: Potential allergy to products or skin irritation.
- Best Candidate: Younger candidates with small pores and minimum fine lines are the best candidates.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR PERMANENT COSMETICS:
We will take the time to determine if you are the right candidate for your desired procedure. This means an extensive consultation on your appointment day, or prior to your appointment. There will be extensive paperwork that will be reviewed determining, based on medical history/medication/skin condition/lifestyle, if a client is a good candidate.
There are so many things that can affect healing and results, like the oiliness of your skin, fine lines and wrinkles, skin conditions and medications. Vitamins, supplements, and medications (think: fish oil, turmeric, or Accutane can all impact the process; do not stop taking any prescribed medication without consulting with your physician. Don’t skip any disclosures, it puts your safety in jeopardy.)
HERE IS A LIST OF PRE-APPOINTMENT INFORMATION:
- If you are getting a lip blushing procedure it is critical that if you have ever had a coldsore, you get a prescription for anti-viral medication, prior to your appointment. Failure to do this could result in a severe outbreak damaging the results of this procedure.
- Do not pick/tweeze/wax/perform electrolysis one week before the procedure.
- Do not tan two weeks prior or have sunburned face/skin Do not have any type of facial 2 weeks prior to treatment Do not work out the day of the procedure.
- Do not have botox 3 weeks prior to your appointment.
- Do not take Fish Oil or Vitamin E one week prior (natural blood thinners).
- Do not wax or tint your eyebrows 3 days before the procedure.
- Do not drink alcohol 24 - 48 hours prior to your appointment to avoid excessive bleeding and poor color deposit.
- Do not consume coffee or any caffeine before your procedure.
- Do not take an aspirin or ibuprofen for pain relief (this thins the blood).
- If you are allergy prone, your technician will need to take additional precautions and perform a patch test. Typically this involves a test a few days before your appointment so let us know if this is something you would like. A tiny amount of pigment is applied in an inconspicuous spot to determine whether the client can tolerate the dye. Red dye, which is (obviously) used for lip enhancement but also frequently added to eyeliner and brow pigments, is most likely to cause adverse reactions.
- If you feel like you have any issue/medication/situation that may require a doctor’s authorization, let us know before appointment day and we will supply you with applicable forms.
WHO IS NOT A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR PERMANENT MAKEUP:
Those who are allergic to any of the substances used during the process — from numbing agents to pigments — should avoid permanent makeup. Clients who can’t take a break from blood thinning medications, or other high-risk medications such as Accutane, or those who have problems with blood clotting or healing can’t get cosmetic tattoos. Anyone who scars easily or is prone to keloid scarring is not an ideal candidate. People with compromised immune systems are not well-suited either. Since hormonal changes can affect the healing process, pregnant women are generally advised against getting permanent makeup. Women who are nursing are also not candidates for permanent cosmetics procedures.
CAN PERMANENT COSMETICS BE REMOVED?
Yes, but seek professional help, do not try to remove anything on your own as it can cause permanent scarring. Saline removal can be done within our studio. This procedure takes several sessions. We are able to inject a saline solution into the skin to draw out the pigment. This process can take multiple sessions. This procedure is much more successful if it is within a 72 hour window after initial procedure
